Gothenburg 13-25 August 2024
Masters athletics runs from age 35 – 100+ and Preston Harriers has a quite a few athletes involved, as well as competing for their club in both Track and Field and Road/cross country events. August saw Gothenburg hold the World Masters Championships this year with both Steve Hallas and Carol Holt competing against over 8000 athletes from all over the world for Great Britain & NI. Steve Hallas competed in the 5000m at the Ullevi stadium in close to 30 degree heat, coming 10th in his heat and 35th (3rd Brit) of a field of 91 athletes, running close to his season’s best. Carol Holt (2nd left) competed in the 200m, 400m, 4x100m relay and 4x 400m relay. She competed at Slottsskogsvallen and Björlanda Athletics Centre over the 4 events. In the 200m she reached the semi-finals, narrowly missing out on the final by 0.16 but was happy to run a season’s best of 27.57. In the 400m, she didn’t get through the heats to the semi-final and was very disappointed. 4 x 100m she became World Champion with 3 other masters athletes from Great Britain which made her 1st world championships and her 1st International Gold medal. 4 x 400m she and the team of masters ladies came 3rd and they won bronze for Great Britain & NI.
