12 Preston Harriers were at Bolton for the third race in the Red Rose Cross Country League. A lot of overnight rain had left wet, muddy conditions underfoot on a course that has everything – muddy grass, stony tracks with a stream crossing and two hills on each lap. The men’s race was 6 miles over 3 laps with the ladies running 1½ laps for 3 miles. In the senior men’s race, first finisher was Richard Smith (21st) followed by Simon Collins (47th). Next two home were vets with Chris Wales (V40, 83rd) two seconds ahead of John Griffiths (V50, 84th). Alex Waddelove (104th) and Stephen Bonsu (141st) followed. Alan Appleby was 154th and again first Vet 65, with Steve Taylor (V60, 161st) and Phil Lakeland (V55, 224th) completing the team. In the ladies’ race Jenny Wren had an excellent race to again finish 24th, backed up by Sue Wickham (LV55, 104th) and the ever youthful Judith Deakin (110th) was first lady vet 70 finisher.
