Derwentwater 10 mile race

The Derwentwater 10 mile race was held for the fifty sixth time last Sunday, making it one of the longest continuous ten mile road races in the country. The race, organised very well by Keswick AC, starts in Keswick town centre. For this year, the course ending had been changed to keep it off a busy road into the town and the old finish outside Keswick school. The finish was in Portinscale and all competitors agreed that it felt, and was, much safer.

The weather was simply glorious; warm sunshine with temperatures nudging 16° C, and superb views across Derwentwater and to the mountain of Skiddaw beyond. The climbs were probably made that little bit harder because of the heat too…

A group of 13 Preston Harriers ran and first Harrier home was Richard Smith, 23rd, in 61.01; Richard was delighted to pick up a spot prize of a rucsac at the presentation afterwards. Andrew Grimshaw and Catherine Slater finished together in under 66 minutes, with Catherine being 4th lady. Alan Appleby was 2nd Vet 65 in 69.35 whilst Russell Codd posted 69.48. There were also good runs from Steve Mort, Charlotte Rawcliffe, Michael Brennand, Steve Needham, Steve Jackson, Sue Wickham, Helen Boyer & Kari Edwards.
