Catforth Canter 5k

(No.3 and last in series) Saturday 6th Aug.

On a beautiful Saturday evening there were 12 Preston Harriers assembled at Catforth Village Hall north of Preston for this race around the roads of Catforth and Lewth. 10 were running and 2 supporters.

The route is just about as flat as you can get, traffic was no problem and the countryside was basking in a sunny, windless evening, perfect for PBs. It was a pity more runners were not out enjoying the conditions of this value for money event put on by Alan Taylor with assistance from Steve Ashcroft and Steve Perry.

The race started by Catforth Primary School at 6.30pm and continued down School Lane, turning left into Lewth Lane and then up to Woodsfold and turning left again into Catforth Road going past the Running Pump and back into Catforth Village to finish back at the school.

Peter Cowling (MV55) and Ken Beazley (MV60) had their usual ding dong battle over the 5k, Peter managing to better Ken's time by 5seconds, but Ken had run the Parkrun earlier in the day. Their times were 20.42 and 20.47.

Next Harrier home in a super time was Masters athlete Cathy Flitcroft (FV55) in a time of 21.07 and she was just 14seconds in front of Paul Jeffries (MV45) who had been competing for the Harriers in the Northern League match at Blackburn in the afternoon. Victoria Duckett (FV45) was following, coming back after being away from running through a bad wrist injury, she posted a pleasing 23.47 while just under a minute behind came Alan Appleby (MV75) running his first road race for quite a while, he clocked 24.39.

Julie Tyrer (FV45) was next Harrier, she had also run at the Northern League match in the 3k earlier and although in marathon training she found a good turn of speed coming in to the finish. Behind Julie came Sue Wickham (FV60) putting in a steady performance, another Harrier in marathon training, she posted 28.02.

Next were Kari Edwards (FV50) and Judith Deakin (FV75) running together most of the way with Kari getting her arms working on the run to the finish to beat Judith to the line. They concluded the Harriers line up with good positive runs all round.

Every finisher got a drink of choice and chocolate or biscuit and a medal, good value for money. The winner was Marco Parolin of BWF in a time of 15.41 and 44 runners took part.

There were plenty of age category prize winners from the Harriers, Peter Cowling, Cathy Flitcroft, Vicky Duckett, Alan Appleby and Judith Deakin and Cathy, Vicky and Julie took the Ladies Team prize too.
