Thur 2 May 2019, Lytham St Annes
The second race of the local road inter-club series was at a blustery and cold but dry Lytham front. With sea defence work taking place, the traditional course had to be slightly shortened by host club Lytham St Annes to around 4.6 miles. The series continues to be popular and the last few years have seen numbers increase fairly dramatically. There were 411 finishers at this race and the organisation of the event by Lytham was excellent.
The clear winner, having established a commanding lead, was Rob Danson of Wesham who was over a minute clear of Preston`s Andy Benson – Danson recording 23.03 and Benson 24.05. Preston`s open team packed in well, with Rob Affleck in 5th showing good form after running the Brighton Marathon a few weeks ago. Chris Tully was 7th in 25.16, Wesley Wilkinson 8th in 25.20 & Nathan Hilditch 9th in 25.44. Simon Collins and Gethin Butler finished together in 15th & 16th, whilst Andy Whaley was 25th in 27.11. Alex Venables and William Metcalf were running alongside each other for most of the course and they finished 27th & 28th respectively.
Mark Lee was first vet 55 on the night, in an overall 34th, and a place behind Simon Robinson. Harriers achieved an open team win as did the vets. The vet 50s team also placed first, with the counters being Gethin Butler, Mark Lee, David Watson and William Johnstone. After the race, the team and individual prize giving took place for the 2018 series.
