Sat 23 Nov 2019, Sefton Park, Liverpool
Over the years, the Liverpool cross country challenge event at Sefton Park, which incorporates the Mid Lancs League and the Liverpool and District League, has grown in stature and is one that is always eagerly anticipated. The event also included the European Cross Country Championship trials at u20, u23 and seniors for the Great Britain team in Portugal next month. So there is the opportunity, each year, to see and race against some top and international runners.
The senior men’s race, the final event of the day, saw a huge field compete over 9.8k, and a win for Ben Connor (Derby) in 30.22. Dan Bebbington had another great run and, in strong company, finished 59th in 33.05. David Rigby was 108th in 35.33 and the club’s Mid Lancs counters also included Will Metcalf, Mariusz Kovacs, Nathan Hilditch and Colin Shuttleworth. Patrick Dever, currently studying in the USA, was awarded a place in the senior GB team at the forthcoming European Championships after placing 11th in the NCAA cross country championships.
In the senior ladies race over 8.1k, sadly, two of the Harriers runners who were highly placed had to drop out, but a very good run saw Katey Markland finish 100th in another race where, again, there were some quality competitors. Becky Taylor was 137th and Laura Conn 151st. Jess Judd, a GB international, now of Blackburn won in 28.22.
A full set of age group races took place with Harriers competing in all of them. The u15 boys were the 2nd placed Mid Lancs team with an excellent run from Dan Valentine leading the team in. The other counters were Charlie Haigh and Jenson Warren. Imogen Blackwell was 1st home for the club in the u15 girls over 3k and the other team counters were Isabelle Cunningham and Olivia Miller.
